Sumo Wrestlers Need Another Plane To Get Off The Ground
Japan Airlines recently had to call another plane in for the wrestling team. No special treatment, they just had to get off the ground to get to their tournament.
Too much luggage in the cargo bin? Too much carry on? Too many people on the plane? No. None of the above. (or, none of the aside)
Sumo Wrestlers Need Second Plane
Greco-Roman wrestling, and Sumo wrestling are two totally different types of wrestling. Also two totally different types of stature – and of course, different uniforms.
According to The Guardian, several sumo wrestlers were booked to attend wrestling event on Amami Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. But the Japan Airlines flight couldn’t quite get off the ground, due to weight limitations.
JAL had to book an extra flight for a group of sumo wrestlers because they were too heavy for the plane. Each wrestler weighs around 265 pounds or 100 pounds more than the average passenger. To solve the problem, the airline booked an extra flight for 27 of the sumo wrestlers.
Just Like Any Other Team, They Travel Together. And There Are Fun Pictures To Prove It
The athletes were scheduled to take Boeing 737-800 flights from Haneda airport in Tokyo and Itami airport in Osaka to Amami Oshima, an island in the south, where they were competing at a festival. But that one plane was not going to do it.
There was a little concern over the fuel capacity when airline staff found out they weren’t flying just everyday passengers, but instead, 27 Sumo wrestlers. The Guardian reported that a JAL spokesperson said “It is extremely unusual for us to operate special flights due to the weight restrictions on this aircraft,”
Apparently it is not the first time the wrestlers have made headlines. In 2014, a picture of the guys packed on a small plane went viral. And this priceless picture on Twitter/X was also a hit.
Gotta love these guys. They are a team – and a team travels together. So get them another plane! All that and a lot more in this edition of Mike & Carla’s “Other News.”
