NNF Inducts Chicago Bear Great Into College Hall of Fame
It’s happening next Tuesday night here in Las Vegas when the National Football Foundation inducts this Chicago Bear great into the College Football Hall of Fame! The Mike & Carla Morning Show had the honor of speaking to defensive tackle Dan Hampton!
It was quite the thrill for Mike O’Brian, who grew up a Bears fan living outside the city of Chicago. So, we all knew this would be something special. Carla Rea, being a Lions fan, also found Hampton to be engaging, fun and very honest.
In fact, it was the story about a former teammate’s nickname that grabbed Carla’s attention. Everyone on that team of 1985 seemed to have a nickname. Hampton was call “Danimal”, Walter Payton was known as “Sweetness” and the list went on.
However, when it came to one former teammate, Carla got a kick out of the story. One reason being, it was taken because of a former Detroit Lion player.
As Hampton tells the story, they were at an event and Hampton had his mother there. Watching Steve McMichael drink beer out of a pitcher of beer dripping down his shirt, Hampton’s mom said, “Who are you Mongo?” Referring to the character played by former Lion player Alex Karras in “Blazing Saddles”!
Hampton said that the name stuck and the rest is history. He talked about that team with a lot of pride and said that it was an honor playing on one of the best football teams in history.
Inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame in 2002, Dan now is entering the College Football Hall of Fame here in Las Vegas on Tuesday night at the Bellagio. Playing his college ball at Arkansas, Hampton was a defensive standout in college.
So much so, the Chicago Bears drafted him 4th in the first round back in 1979. To be the center piece of what would become thee best defense in the NFL.
Whether you’re a Bears fan or not, you will enjoy our visit with one heck of a player and a great guy!
