Seattle Kracken Make Jessica Campbell First Female Coach In NHL
Jessica Campbell has made sports history. She is the first female coach in the NHL.
Jessica Campbell Has Shattered The Glass Ceiling With A Hockey Puck
The Seattle Kraken made sports history this week, when they named Jessica Campbell the first female coach in NHL history. She is now the assistant coach to Seattle Kracken head coach Dan Bylsma.
For the past two years, she was assistant coach for the Seattle Cracker’s minor league team, The Coachella Valley Firebirds. Now, she’s coaching in the bigs.
Yahoo sports reports that Kraken General Manager Ron Francis said, the team did not hire Campbell because she is a woman. He stated, “We hired her because we thought she’s a good coach. She has an interesting background with not only skating, but skill development, and that’s been a big part of what they’ve been able to do with Coachella Valley.”
Jessica Campbell is proud to be the first professional female coach, but hopefully she won’t be the last.
Female Coaches In Major League Sports Are Very Rare
The WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces have won two titles with coach Becky Hammon at the helm. And there are a lot of female coaches in female sports. But there are also still mostly males coaching female sports.
At this point in the 21st century, one would hope that gender wouldn’t play a part in a team’s coaching staff. As long as they are a good coach – like Seattle Kracken General Manager pointed out with Jessica Campbell – that should be all that matters.
An article in Sports Betting Dime broke down a really interesting study on female coaches in major league sports.
While most people support female coaches in any sport, many fans still believe that major league teams coached by women would be less successful than those coached by men. And one in four NBA and NFL fans think that male athletes would feel emasculated by female coaches.
The NFL fans who would support a female coach the most, is the Pittsburgh Steelers. The NFL team with the least support for a female coach, is Da Bears. Are you shocked? Probably not.
There are still a lot of barriers preventing women from become coaches in major league sports. There most likely will always be. But hopefully, the Jessica Campbell’s will become more prominent in sports one day.
Congratulations to Jessica Campbell, first female coach in the NHL. And way to go Seattle Kracken. Now maybe we can work on our own Las Vegas Golden Knights.
