What They Actually Should Be Teaching In School

With all of our kids going through life, what is it they really should be teaching in school nowadays? That’s the topic that came up on The Mike & Carla Morning Show this morning.

Oh sure, they learn reading, writing and arithmetic…but shouldn’t they be teaching more of life’s lessons to get our kids through life? Or is that the job of mom and dad.

Think about it…for the guys, who taught you how to tie a tie a tie? For the women, was it your mom that taught you all you needed to know to make your way in life.

All politics aside, the text lines blew up this morning and so did the phone lines. The questions was what should they be teaching our kids in schools to help them down the path of reality?

What They Should Be Teaching In School!

Matter of fact, Grandshake put out an article on this very topic. The article brought up some great ideas of what they should be teaching in school.

How to budget, how to dress, personal hygiene, how to build a resume…all things we should know. How to be a gentleman, how to act like a proper young lady…all the skills one should have to make it through life.

One woman pointed out that “sex-ed” should be replaced with a class on relationships. Communication! How to get along with one another. That’s not a bad idea is it?

All these things are needed to make it through life. Things you need to know to survive in the real world. How to budget, paying bills, paying taxes…how about how to manage your credit? All good thing you should know.

Oh sure you had General Business in school that should have taught you all that. But did it? Did any of us listen? Well, of course not!

How about psychology in high school…how to deal with depression, how to handle breakups! Or maybe they need to teach a class for parents with all this.

Nonetheless, listen to the segment and see what you think…oh, and enjoy!

Over the years, he has hosted a numerous amount of community events and has been the P.A. announcer for a number of sports teams in Las Vegas. He has written on living in Las Vegas, the sports teams here, as well as odd & little-known facts about Las Vegas & Nevada.

Things We All SHOULD Have Learned In High School

Did we actually learn anything of use in high school? I mean, real life skills?

High school is that place where we are supposed to learn everything we are going to need in life, right? It’s supposed to be the place where we start finding ourselves, and figure out what it is we want to do with the next fifty, or so, years of our lives.

Most high school’s curriculum do a decent job with basic math and literacy. But a lot of people graduate high school, and then spend the next several years slowly realizing, “Holy crap – high school left me totally unprepared  for real life!”

How do credit cards really work? What does buying a house involve? Down payment, homeowners insurance,  property tax – what??? And you still don’t know that you can’t wash the whites with everything else!

There’s a reason the term “Adulting” has come to be loathed. So many of us leave school and go out into the world, only to discover we were never taught some of the basic life skills that we need, to simply be successful people.

But this goes beyond basic how to’s, addition, subtraction, and dangling participles (look it up).

Sometimes you need more than bare-bones training. You need the context, and soft skills that are not found anywhere in textbooks. Very luckily, we live in a world that allows us to somewhat take control of our education, and continued lifelong learning.

Schools have a tall order when it comes to preparing kids for adulthood. These are some basic life skills that we SHOULD be able to fit in somewhere, so that kids have them at least by the time they leave home. But alas – NO.
