CIS Nevada Helping Las Vegas Teens Get To Graduation Day
Communities In Schools of Nevada, or CIS, has been going the distance to help our local kids graduate high school. As we wrap up another school year in Las Vegas, we wanted to check in with CIS to see how the 2022-2023 year went.
Communities In Schools of Nevada is part of the country’s leading stay-in-school organization. The organization has proven to keep students on the path to graduation. As well as to prepare them for success after high school. CIS uses an evidence-based model called Integrated Student Supports (ISS). This model works by connecting students and their families to educational and community resources on their school campuses.
How CIS accomplishes this is by having full-time site coordinators in schools. Specifically, these well-trained professionals are on campus at low-income schools or schools that otherwise have high needs. These site coordinators collaborate with school administration, students and students’ families to help students. By doing this, they identify students’ individual needs and work with other organizations in Clark County to get those needs met.
The CIS network includes over 120 agency partners, both statewide and national. This community model is where the name “Communities In Schools of Nevada” name came from. With the support of these community partners, CIS can find food, housing, medical health services, tutoring and more for students in need.
CIS currently serves more than 87,000 in Nevada. They have a presence in 20% of the Clark County school district. For the 2021-2022 school year, CIS’ statewide graduation rate was 94%. For this year, the organization turned to the community at large to help with last-minute costs of things like cap and gown fees or application fees for college. Tami Hance-Lehr, CEO and state director, spoke with Wendy Rush to recap this school year and discuss what’s to come for CIS.
