McVie passed away on November 30, 2023. At the time, the news only reported that she died at the age of 79 after a short illness. Her estate didn’t given any further information.
Now, McVie‘s estate has revealed her cause of death. Christine McVie died of a massive stroke. It was technically a ischemic stroke, which is when blood going to the brain is prevented due to an obstruction in a vessel, people.com reported. This is the most common type of stroke.
According to her death certificate, there was also a secondary cause of death.
A secondary cause of death was listed as cancer. It is unknown what type of cancer McVie had. Cancer cells were found in her body, but neither a related tumor nor the origin of where they came could be determined (people.com).
Though McVie wasn’t open about the specificity of her health issues, she was quite open about having them. In an interview prior to her last tour with Fleetwood Mac, McVie said her health made it difficult for her to perform and she didn’t know if she would go out on the road again.
In addition to cancer and the stroke, McVie was dealing with other health issues.
According to her death certificate, McVie was also suffering from atrial fibrillation, more commonly known as AFib. Meaning her heart was beating irregularly or at a past much faster or slower than average.
McVie’s cause of death was revealed in court as part of the proceedings to settle her estate, theblast.com reported. Her fortune was worth more than $50 Million. The sole heir to the estate is McVie’s brother and his family, since she had no husband or children of her own. Several charities will also received some of her assets.
