Lee Canyon Shuts Down For Snow Safety Assessment
There is only a short window each year to hit the ski slopes in Las Vegas, and there’s a lot of snow up at Mt Charleston, and Lee Canyon. But it has to be safe to be there, and it may take a day or two to make sure that is the case.
Lee Canyon Resort has decided to close operations on this/Tuesday morning, according to an Instagram post from Lee Canyon’s official account.
On Monday, very sadly, a man died after an avalanche at Mt. Charleston. The U.S. Forest Service confirmed the avalanche happened in a backcountry area of Spring Mountain National Recreation area.
Las Vegas police confirmed the avalanche happened around 12:23 p.m. A man was caught in an avalanche near Mummy Springs Trail on Mt. Charleston. First responders performed CPR for 30 minutes, sources said. Weather conditions such as wind and sleet on the mountain, are making any recovery efforts difficult, police said.
Eighteen years ago to the day, an avalanche on Mt. Charleston killed a teenage boy snowboarding. The 13-year-old was swept off a ski lift by a wave of snow.
“After initial snow safety assessments, Lee Canyon has made the difficult decision to close all operations today,” the post read. “Due to the significant amount of snow safety work and avalanche mitigation that needs to be completed.”
A spokesperson for Lee Canyon said that the area received 14 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, and forecasters predict another 11 to 17 inches throughout the day on Tuesday.
The closure will include parking and the base area to ensure the safety of Lee Canyon team members and visitors. According to officials, refunds for pre-purchased tickets and products will be refunded automatically.

Las Vegas One Of The Best Cities To Get Healthy And Stay Healthy
Was your New Year’s resolution the same as it is every year – to be more active, to exercise, to lose weight? Well let’s make it happen this year!
According to a study by WalletHub, it shouldn’t be that hard, since Las Vegas ranked among the best cities for an active lifestyle. We’re lucky to have the great weather we have, and the open spaces we have.
Actually achieving a healthy lifestyle is more difficult than we’d like it to be, and it requires a consistently active routine. Sometimes there are obstacles, because where you live may not promote a healthy way of life. Some cities lack sidewalks, and neighborhood parks. Weather also plays a big part in how active you are – or can be.
WalletHub compared the 100 biggest U.S. cities based on 36 key indicators of an active lifestyle. Their data set ranges from the average monthly fitness-club fee, to bike score, to the share of physically inactive adults.
Honolulu took the number one spot, followed by San Francisco in second, New York in third, Chicago in fourth, and Las Vegas in fifth place. Rounding out the top ten: Cincinnati in sixth place, San Diego in seventh, Madison Wisconsin in eighth, Denver in ninth, and Atlanta in tenth!
Here’s how different a city can be – Las Vegas is number five, North Las Vegas came in at 100! What???? Not that different from Las Vegas, and it’s right over there! Nonetheless, a very low ranking.
As far as fitness clubs, our neighbors up north ranked number three. Reno has more fitness clubs per capita than 97 other cities!
Want to be more active in 2023? Here are some hiking trails in the Las Vegas valley, that I really like, to help you out!
