National High Five Day: How It All Got Started
We celebrate something each and everyday, but today is National High Five Day and we have the scoop on how it all got started. This morning The Mike & Carla Morning Show let everyone know where the “high five” got it’s start!
Now if you’re thinking it had to be a sporting event, you would be correct. However, was it created on purpose? Did those that first gave out the up high hand slap actually know what they were starting?
How Did The High Five Get Started?
First of all, the story according to National Today, claims that the original clap was done at a sporting event. So, you would have been correct…it all started at a Major League Baseball game back in 1977.
The Los Angeles Dodgers will get the credit for starting this national craze during a game against the Houston Astros.
According to the article, Dusty Baker had just hit a home run and, long story short, teammate Glenn Burke just on a whim had his hand up in the air. Walking by in the dugout, Baker went up to slap it with his hand…and there ya go!
Of course, listening to Dusty Baker tell the story, he takes no credit for creating this phenomenon back in the 70s. He was just doing something instinctive and not even thinking about.
Isn’t that how most things get started anyway? We weren’t trying to start anything, we just did it. Well, others started to pick up on and it and before ya know it, everyone is slappin’ hands up high.
The only ironic thing about this is that we celebrate this odd way of saying “good job” on the third Thursday in April. Although Baker and Burke’s engagement happened on October 2, 1977, we still celebrate in April for some reason.
To hear how it all came together, listen to the segment yourself. Hear from Dusty Baker himself talking about it and enjoy!
