Group Therapy: Being Honest With Your Child
Watching the Olympics with your kids, this is where dreams begin of being a big time athlete are created. However, being honest with you child might not be as easy as you think!
In this morning’s segment of Group Therapy on The Mike & Carla Morning Show, that was the subject of conversation. A mother emailed in saying that her 9 year old daughter has dreams of being in the Olympics after watching Simone Biles.
The kid takes gymnastics right now and in all fairness, according to the Dad, the child is not that good at it. So, the father is telling the mom that maybe they should just be honest with her. Tell her that she’s never going to make it and stop funding something that truly is not going to materialize.
You Just Might Want To Be Honest With Your Child
Although the article focuses on the chance of your kid playing Major League Baseball, NBC News talks about just that! It readily points out that even all the effort will not guarantee your kid is going to be an pro athlete! Even as talented as you or they think they are….it’s just that hard.
Not too mention the financial factor and all the sacrifices needed, it’s truly a tough road on every level. So, in this morning’s Group Therapy, the father got little support of telling his daughter that she sucked at gymnastics and to move on to something else.
Even Mike O’Brian and Carla Rea had their dreams crushed…not by their parents, simply by reality. Most listeners suggested to let the daughter continue with gymnastics and sooner or later, reality will set in.
Or even better yet, the coach will have the “talk” and let her down gently! That might be the best way to go. That way the parents don’t have to feel the pressure of erasing any confidence the kid might in the first place. Especially if they’re thinking of doing something else.
It was a tough session, but good advice from a lot of listeners who have gone through the same thing!
