St. Patrick’s Day Traditions We Do That Are Not Irish
When you get ready for work, school, or any other activity on St. Patrick’s Day, you always make sure you’re wearing green! You don’t want to get pinched!
And make sure you eat your corned beef and cabbage! Plus you can’t forget to drink as much as possible! All the things we need to do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!
What would you say if all these things are NOT Irish traditions? Yep! Leave it to us here in the United States to take a holiday from another country, and turn it into fun and party’s!
Where did the Green come from? If you look it up, St. Patrick was associated with the color blue and not green! So where did the green come from? In 1798, during the Irish rebellion, the clover became a symbol used to represent nationalism!
As far as foods go, Americans eat corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick’s Day, but in Ireland, they eat Lam, Ham, & Bacon! It’s believed we switched it to corned beef because it was more affordable!
And drinking for the holiday wasn’t a thing either. In fact the holiday was a non-drinking religious day in Ireland! It actually didn’t become a holiday until 1902 and Irish law prohibited pubs from even being open on March 17th. It wasn’t until later that they lifted that law. And let’s not get started on the green beer!
So if you’re celebrating today or down the road, know a lot of the traditions we do for St. Patrick’s Day did not come from Ireland.

New York city is the largest city in the country, but when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, it ranks at #5 on the list!

Not sure how Pittsburgh showed up in the Top 5…great blue-collar type city, but when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, we have to think they must really blow it out. That’s maybe why it comes in at #4?

It’s surprising that a city that literally dyes the river that runs through it GREEN to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day would come in at only #3! Considering the Irish pubs in this town and the Irish population…oh well!

The second city from the state of Pennsylvania to make it into the Top 5 of best cities to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. There must be something going on in the “City of Brotherly Love” that we don’t know about!

Again, no surprise here as mentioned in the article above…when it comes time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, it’s Boston at the top of the list! Congrats and there ya go, the Top 5 Cities to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!
