REM’s Michael Stipe Releases Benefit Single For Earth Day
Although Michael Stipe might be best known for his work with R.E.M., he’s done a lot of solo work.
Michael Stipe was the lead singer and lyricist for the 80’s alternative rock band until they disbanded in 2011. In 2017, he released his first official solo composition and has since dropped other solo singles at random. “Future, If Future” came to us in March of 2018. He released “Your Capricious Soul” in October of 2019. And then “Drive to the Ocean” in January of 2020. He’s also done various collaborations with many other musicians.
It just seems like instead of writing for album deadlines, Stipe releases music when he feels like it. A testament to his own capriciousness, perhaps. But we’re not complaining. The man has a musical genius and a voice that’s unlike any of his peers. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 as a member of R.E.M.
Stipe is also no stranger to making music to benefit a cause. In 2006, he released a six-song EP for the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief fund. The song was made up entirely of different cover versions of the same song: Joseph Arthur‘s “In The Sun“. One version, recorded with Coldplay‘s Chris Martin, went to the top spot on the Canadian singles chart.
In 2012, Stipe appeared with Martin at Madison Square Garden to perform R.E.M.’s hit “Losing My Religion“. Proceeds went to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Recently, Stipe dropped a single in honor of Earth Day. Titled “Give Me A Hand“, the electronic-heavy track also features vocals from violinist Gaelynn Lea. Proceeds from the single will go to the EarthPercent x Earth Day 2023 campaign, which supports organizations that focus on climate energy.
The single is only available for download until May 6. You can purchase it here.

There are other ways to honor Earth Day in Las Vegas.
If you’re not able to attend a clean up event but still want to celebrate Earth Day, there are lots of ways. You can conserve water by taking a shorter shower, turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, or making sure the dishwasher is full. Buy a pot of flowers that attract pollinating bees. Or take a walk around your neighborhood and pickup trash. Just a few examples. You can get these and more ideas at almanac.com.
Of course something else we can do for Earth Day is something we should be doing everyday. Recycling. But how does Nevada compare to the rest of the country in our recycling habits?
