Celebrate: It’s ‘National Bologna Day’ Today
It doesn’t happen very often, but if you like bologna, now’s the time to celebrate because it’s “National Bologna Day” today! Clearly it’s a day that a lot of listeners take seriously according to the texts that came in on The Mike & Carla Morning Show this morning!
According to an article that came out a few years ago, published by Eater, it dates back the meat all the way back to 1661 and gives credit to the German immigrants for bringing it to the United States while they settled in the Midwest, Appalachian Mountain region and in Pennsylvania.
Bologna was one of the more accessible meats dating back to the early 20th century. It was found to be a favorite back then for a few reasons, it kept well, and during the Great Depression and during war time, it was cheap to buy and easy to ration.
Same holds true growing up as a kid who’s mom always made one for school lunches…think about it, especially if you had a big family. It was cheap, the kids loved it, especially with mustard or a slice of cheese! Throw in some chips and you have a 5 Star home-made lunch! Now how it’s made and what it’s made of…well, that’s a topic for another day! Like the sausage, you love it, but you just don’t want to know how it’s made. Shhhhhh!
Mike O’Brian even mentioned that his nephew, already in his early 50’s, still a huge fan of bologna and makes the grocery list every month! So let’s set aside October 24th, head over to the deli, have the butcher slice up some bologna and sandwiches for everyone. If not, then just go over to the lunch meat section and grab a package of it and when enjoying this mysterious meat we celebrate!
So, enjoy the “Bologna” segment from this morning and since we all know the one “bologna” song from the Oscar Mayer commercial back in the mid 70s that everyone still sings, how about a song about “bologna” from country music legend Alan Jackson!
