VIDEO: David Byrne on ‘SNL’
The Leap Day 2020 episode of Saturday Night Live was one of the best of the 45th season of the iconic sketch show for a number of reasons, and one of those reasons was David Byrne.
Byrne was the musical guest last night (February 29) which marked his first return to SNL in 31 years, and it reunited him with host John Mulaney who he worked with on the recent Netflix special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch.
Byrne’s first performance was of him and the musicians from his Broadway show American Utopia doing a rendition of the Talking Heads classic “Once in a Lifetime.”

Byrne and his American Utopia musicians would then appear in the “Airport Sushi” sketch where they would close out the mini-musical making fun of Laguardia Airport with a reworking of Talking Heads’ “Road to Nowhere” called “Plane to Nowhere.”
Byrne and the American Utopia musicians then took to the studio 8H stage one last time and performed “Toe Jam,” which was featured in the American Utopia stage production. The track was originally recorded as part of the 2008 album I Think We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat by The Brighton Port Authority, a collaboration that featured Byrne, Fatboy Slim and Dizzee Rascal.
