VIDEO: Jazz Musician Play Guitar During Brain Surgery
This might be the most extreme example of multi-tasking anyone has seen in some time.
Musa Manzini, a jazz musician from South Africa, underwent a craniotomy while awake to remove a brain tumor. The procedure took a whopping six hours, and the doctor had Manzini play guitar during the procedure.
Why? Manzini told IOL, ““The decision to perform an awake craniotomy rather than one under general anesthesia was motivated by Dr. [Basil] Enicker’s concern to preserve and restore my finger movements, taking into consideration my career as a musician.”
By having Manzini awake, Dr. Enicker also explained that he and his medical staff could “…test regions of the brain before they are removed. This allows for increased removal of the tumor, while minimizing damage to the brain.”
So, yeah…the next time you don’t want to go to the doctor for a routine physical because of the poking and prodding, remember this story.
