LISTEN: John Mulaney and Tom Jones’ “What’s New Pussycat?”
The last thing you’d think Tom Jones, who celebrates his 77th birthday today (June 7), would help inspire is a stellar stand-up comedy bit, but comedian John Mulaney puts that notion to shame on his 2009 album The Top Part.
The last track on the album titled “The Salt and Pepper Diner” chronicles Mulaney recounting “the best meal he ever had.” It involved an adolescent Mulaney and his best friend entering a Chicago diner, ordering their food and then proceeding to pump money into the diner jukebox and selecting 21 plays of Jones’ hit “What’s New Pussycat?”
What proceeds is one of the best laugh-out-loud tales of people watching ever told. If you’re looking for a laugh today, we suggest you listen to the clip below. (Warning: Use headphones, because there’s some NSFW language ahead.)
