My Favorite Christmas Present When I Was A Kid
I’ll never forget the year that I got my favorite Christmas present when I was a kid. Santa Claus brought me a Hot Wheels set!
I must have been nine or ten years old, and I still held out hope that Santa was real. My older cousin had already told me that he was made-up, but I figured I’d write to him and ask for the toy that almost every kid my age wanted back then: a Hot Wheels set. Even if my Mom or Dad were really Santa, it wouldn’t hurt to let them know the toy I really wanted. No, I needed it! You know what it’s like when you’re a kid and you really want something.
So, why did I want Hot Wheels for Christmas that year? Mainly because of this awesome commercial, which I saw hundreds of times during Saturday morning cartoons, in the months leading up to Santa’s big day.
I was absolutely ecstatic when I ripped off that wrapping paper from that big box and saw the cover photo: Two boys about my age having a great time playing with their Hot Wheels set! I could not wait to open up that box and begin setting up my track. That awesome bright orange plastic track with the maroon connectors. Santa, or my folks, had brought me the high banked racing curve set, and the loopty-loop as well. I don’t even remember eating Christmas dinner that day because I was so engrossed in setting up the track and getting those cars to go as fast as I could get them to go.
Christmas really is for kids, or the kid in all of us. I don’t really remember when I grew out of playing with Hot Wheels. It must have been only two or three years later. But I will never forget the excitement I felt when Santa brought me that one toy I had to have.

List of 30 Toys That Defined the '80s
Some ’80s toys started as American Greetings card series, including the Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake, while its competitor Hallmark kept pace with Rainbow Bright. Safety wasn’t necessarily paramount in the ’80s, as a number of these toys resulted in trips to the hospital, but not a decline in popularity. Children of the 1980s, read on to see if any of your favorites made Stacker’s list of 30 toys that defined the decade.
