Heart Surgery Postpones Penn & Teller Show
Penn & Teller have been a staple in the Las Vegas entertainment scene for almost 30 years. And they’ve actually been together longer than that, since the late 70’s. They performed their first show together at a Renaissance festival in Minnesota in 1975.
Penn & Teller’s 21-year run at the Rio Hotel & Casino has landed them the title of the longest-running act at the same venue in Las Vegas. They’ve recently had to postpone their shows, though, due to heart surgery. Teller, the silent partner in the duo, has had his share of health battles. Open-heart surgery is just the latest. Back in 2018 and 2019, Teller had to go through three separate back surgeries over the span of just 18 months.
Penn & Teller have temporary taken down their infamous show, The Las Vegas Review Journal reported. Teller underwent bypass surgery last Thursday, and is now in recovery. His doctors have ordered him not to return to the stage for several weeks. Teller was just on stage a week and a half ago. And the duo are hoping to return to the Rio before year’s end.
For now, it’s unclear whether Penn will fill the gap with his own variety of entertainment. It’s certainly possible, as he has done so in the past when Teller had to take leave. At the end of 2019, when Teller was recovering from back surgery, Penn performed his Penn & Friends show with various guest artists. If no show is planned, Penn will undoubtedly have plenty to do. The premier of their FX series “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” is happening on October 14. And Penn‘s latest book is dropping October 11.
Penn & Teller have over 12,000 shows under their belts. So we don’t anticipate this being the end. They still have a lot of show left in them. The duo are hoping to be back on stage at the Rio by November or December.
