Your Pet Must Be Microchipped Or You Could Be Fined…Or Worse
If you own a dog or cat and you live in the city of Las Vegas, then be sure your pet has been microchipped. If not, you could be fined, or even worse. A Las Vegas animal ID microchip ordinance goes into effect today, August 1, 2024.
New Las Vegas Animal ID Microchip Ordinance Now In Effect
We told you about this new ordinance last fall. And now, the ordinance passed by the Las Vegas City Council on October 18, 2023, is in full effect.
If it is discovered that your dog or cat does NOT have an embedded animal ID microchip, you could be fined up to $1,000 dollars. Or you could also be thrown in jail for up to six months. In fact, you may receive both punishments for violating this new Las Vegas ordinance.
Why on earth did the Las Vegas City Council pass this ordinance last fall? Mainly because our animal shelters are being overrun with lost and stray cats and dogs. If all pet owners follow the new ordinance, lost dogs and cats can be more readily reunited with their families and pet owners.

Here’s What You Need To Know About New Animal ID Microchip Ordinance
First of all, this new ordinance stipulates that once you embed an animal ID microchip on your dog or cat, you must register your “contact information and microchip numbers with the microchip registration company and our (City of Las Vegas) Animal Protection Services through the animal pet licensing program.”
In addition, if the ownership of a dog or cat is changed, the new information must also be changed within 30 days.
If you breed dogs or cats, you need to be aware that this new animal ID microchip ordinance also applies to breeders. According to the City of Las Vegas website, “ you need to ensure that all dogs and cats offered for sale have been microchipped before being transported to a pet shop or sold.”
So, if you need help to make sure you and your pets comply with this new animal ID microchip ordinance, you can contact the Animal Foundation, the Nevada SPCA, or your trusted veterinarian.
