Animal Foundation Waiving Fees For Animals In August
The Animal Foundation animal rescue in Las Vegas is helping adult dogs find their forever homes during the entire month of August. This initiative is part of a nationwide “Clear The Shelters” campaign to make more space in the shelter for animals that need help. From now until August 31, the Animal Foundation is waiving adoption fees for all dogs and cats 6 months and older. According to the Animal Foundation website, the adoptions that have the waived fees include surgery for spay/neuter, microchipping and all up-to-date vaccines. Though the fees are waived, there may still be a ten dollar licensing fee that applies to new adoptions. Appointments are not needed for prospective adopters. Instead, the shelter will begin adoptions at 11am every weekday on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Animal Foundation is located at 655 North Mojave Road in Las Vegas. That’s close to the intersection of Bonanza and Mojave, just north of the 215 North Beltway. They have been around since 1978 and, according to their website, were voted last year as the “Best Place to Volunteer” in the Las Vegas Review Journal’s “Best of Las Vegas” awards. They have a lot of volunteer opportunities for the Las Vegas community.
HOW A VOLUNTEER SAVED MY DOG’S LIFE
And I have to say I LOVE the volunteers at The Animal Foundation. I adopted my German Shepherd, Bella, from the Animal Foundation many years ago. She was rescued from a group of people that were using her as a bait dog. Suffice it to say, she was very scared of people. Because of this, she had been at the shelter for several months without any prospects. If it wasn’t for a volunteer who saw her potential and secretly changed her exit date on her paperwork, I never would have met her. And she was the sweetest, most loyal pup I’ve ever had. I never got that volunteer’s name, but I’m forever grateful for his compassion for that little girl who just needed someone to trust with her heart.
So, if you’ve been thinking about a new fur baby, this month is a good time to go find one!

Cats And Dogs Who Are The Best Of Friends
Who ever said cats and dogs can’t get along. Since the dawn of time, “fighting like cats and dogs” has been a phrase thrown around to describe a tumultuous relationship. But sometimes dogs and cats can actually be friends. Just like animals who live with kids, dogs and cats just have to be socialized at the right age so they get to know each other. I know many friends who have both a cat and a dog and they all say the same thing: that the two get along great. Worst case scenario with my friends’ experiences is that their pets ignore each other but are still amicable and able to live together in harmony. So where did this “fighting like cats and dogs” thing come from? Well, the same dog owned by my friend who gets along great with his cat sister, does not do as well when a strange cat comes wandering by the back patio door. That points to familiarity being a necessity for success.
According to a mixed species research from the Journal of Veterinary Medicine, there isn’t solid evidence about what factors lead to a successful cat-dog relationship. Though the age at which the two are introduced to each other seemed to be a big determinate. One interesting discovery in this study is that the cat was the one who seemed to control the success of the bond. The study reported, via sciencedirect.com, that “comfortability of the cat was a stronger predictor of amicability than comfortability of the dog; frequency of the cat appearing uncomfortable with the dog was a better predictor for reduced amicability than the dog appearing uncomfortable in the presence of the cat.” That might be the closest thing to proof that cats are higher maintenance!
Here is a collection of cats and dogs who not only live in harmony, but are the best of friends.
