If you had $200,000 extra money to spend every year, what would you do with it? Elaborate vacations? Luxury cars? The family of a child with a severe bleeding disorder has to spend that amount every year just to prevent bleeding.
And it costs even more for individuals who have built up inhibitors to treatment. For those individuals, the medical bills can total upwards of $1million annually. Hard to imagine. But that is the reality for those with a bleeding disorder. Characterized by the inability to form a proper blood clot, bleeding disorders go by several names. Including hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and rare factor disorders.
The Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation is determined to help the bleeding disorder community in Nevada. They are hosting their annual UNITE for Bleeding Disorders walk on October 7 at Floyd Lamb Park. The annual event celebrates the resilience, dedication, and perseverance of those who live with a bleeding disorder. The event also raises funds to allow the National Hemophilia Foundation to continue their mission of finding cures for inheritable blood disorders. And to help the organization address the complications that come from these disorders. Which they do through education, research and advocacy.
UNITE for Bleeding Disorders Walk Fundraising Goal
The UNITE for Bleeding Disorders walk is the largest fundraiser for the Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation. And the organization is the only one of its kind in our state. So this event is vitally important in helping those in Nevada's bleeding disorder community. The fundraising goal for the walk is $50,000. All funds raised will stay right here in Nevada.
The walk will begin on October 7 with registration at 9am. Refreshments will be available. Opening ceremonies being at 10am with walk commencing immediately after. There will be an award presentation following the walk. And participants are encouraged to bring lunch for this part to enjoy with others. Participants are also encouraged to pre-register for the event. Those that do will have a chance to earn a variety of UNITE for Bleeding Disorders incentives. Including a koozie, sunglasses, trucker hat and window cling.
Individuals who personally donate $25 or more will receive a special UNITE for Bleeding Disorders t-shirt and walk bag. Registration is available at www.hfnv.org.
Signs You Might Have A Bleeding Disorder, And What To Do About It
March is Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month.
There are many different types of bleeding disorders. And each person's bleeding disorder is unique. Each has different symptoms and different risks. And that means each person with a bleeding disorder needs a unique treatment plan. Some take prescribed medications. Others require infusions or even surgery.
The Bleeding and Clotting Clinic at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is one of the few places in Nevada that offers specialized care for bleeding disorders. They offer annual comprehensive exams to help people manage their bleeding disorders and its symptoms. The clinic primarily helps pediatric patients but does have services for adults as well. They do this because bleeding disorders are typically a lifelong issue.
Your general practitioner can test you for a bleeding disorder and the Bleeding and Clotting Clinic at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation can do any follow up needed for concerns following that test. Doctor Aimee Foord, D. O. Director of the Bleeding and Clotting Clinic at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is the last step in the clinic's comprehensive exam. Dr. Foord was a guest on the show to explain the details of blood disorders and their treatments.
Most bleeding disorders are genetic.
You should have a doctor test you if someone in your family has a bleeding disorder. They are most discovered when a family member is diagnosed with one. One of the bleeding disorders that is genetic is also the most common. Von Willebrand disease affects approximately 2.5 million people in United States.
Talking Solutions guest Shawntel Ringler found out she had Von Willebrand disease when her daughter was diagnosed with it. Shawntel joins Dr. Foord on the show to share her story of how she was diagnosed. She also discussed what life looks like for her and her daughter, and what she wants people to know about someone like her.
