There’s a debit card scam that is conning many Las Vegas valley residents out of thousands of dollars. So far, reports indicate residents of Henderson and Summerlin are being targeted by these scammers.

Debit Card Scam Bilking Thousands Of Dollars From Las Vegas Valley Residents

Police in Henderson and Las Vegas Metro Police are reporting residents are being conned out of thousands of dollars by the latest debit card scam. That’s according to reports on Fox5Vegas.com and KTNV.com.

In Henderson, KTNV’s Alyssa Roberts describes the debit card scam in detail. Apparently, these scammers can make it look like you’re receiving a legitimate phone call from your financial institution. It may even be a person or business you know or trust.

Furthermore, Roberts’ article states these crooks somehow know important information about your financial accounts such as PIN numbers and account numbers. That’s how they convince these debit card scam victims that they are legitimate bank employees.

Subsequently, the scammer on the phone will tell you that your debit card has been compromised. Then, they say they’ll be sending a bank employee to your home to take the debit card and destroy it properly.

However, that’s not the case. The card is then used by the scammers to run up thousands of dollars in fraudulent transactions.

The good news is that one of these debit card scam suspects has been arrested and charged by Henderson Police, per the report on KTNV.com. But there are most likely more suspects involved in these scams, so be careful.

Here’s How You Can Avoid Becoming The Next Debit Card Scam Victim

You know if all of these identity scammers, credit card scammers, and debit card scammers put all that time and effort into doing something productive, they wouldn’t have to steal honest residents’ hard-earned money.

But since that is not the case these days, we all need to be vigilant to avoid becoming the next victim of this, or any other, debit card scam.

The article on Fox5Vegas.com by Elaine Emerson notes that victims of this illegal activity in Summerlin even received verification codes by text, further convincing them they were dealing with legitimate bank employees.

Her report also lists some actions we can all take to protect ourselves and our money. For example, it’s a good idea to avoid answering phone calls from numbers you do not recognize.

If you do answer a call that sounds the least bit suspicious, be sure to hang up and phone your financial institution directly. Use the bank’s phone number on the back of your credit or debit card. You should never use phone numbers provided by the callers.

It’s good to know for sure that no banking or financial institution would ever send a representative to your home to take your credit or debit card from you, so don’t give it to anyone.

If you ever feel that you may have fallen victim to this, or any, debit card scam, it’s a good idea to freeze your card until you’re certain it has not been compromised. All good advice from LVMPD contained in Emerson’s article.
