That’s because they have to deal with the different hotel and casino groups separately. However, they’ve been reaching deals with the major resorts over the past few months. Now, they’re planning to strike on February 2nd if they cannot sign an agreement with a large number of Las Vegas hotels and casinos.
The Latest Plans For A Las Vegas Culinary Union Strike
You will probably see Las Vegas Culinary Union, Local 226, workers picketing outside the Sahara Hotel and Casino on Friday evening, January 19th. It’s important to remember that this is informational picketing by union members, not a strike. Yet. But they are scheduling a strike against the Sahara and quite a few other properties beginning on February 2nd.
So, if an agreement is not reached before then, about 7,700 culinary union workers will strike. The resorts, hotels, and casinos in their crosshairs include some big names. Besides the Sahara, Las Vegas Strip properties currently engaged in contract negotiations include: Circus Circus, Hilton Grand Vacations, Rio, The Strat, Treasure Island, Virgin Hotels, and Westgate.
Furthermore, local culinary workers may strike against a bunch of downtown hotels and casinos. Per their website, CulinaryUnion226.org, they must reach deals with The D Casino, Binion’s, Circa, Downtown Grand, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Main Street, and Plaza.
Some Las Vegas Resorts Are Signing Deals
By the same token, Local 226 is signing deals with some of the major resort companies in Las Vegas. Late last year, MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts. Subsequently, on January 13th of this year, the culinary union signed a five-year deal with the Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas. Most recently, a tentative agreement with Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas was reached yesterday, January 18th.
It is interesting to note that the major strike planned last fall came just before the huge Formula One race here in Las Vegas. Now, the super football game is just around the corner, and Local 226 is threatening to strike again. Moreover, there are plenty of huge conventions here in Las Vegas this month. We’ll have to wait and see how negotiations progress.
