The Alternative Peer Group Giving Help To Las Vegas Teens
The Alternative Peer Group in Las Vegas is the adolescent peer center for the There Is No Hero In Heroin Foundation. Founded by Joe Engle after he lost his teenage son to a drug overdose, TINHIH is dedicating to ending the devastation caused by addiction.
The Alternative Peer Group was started to give special focus to adolescents in Southern Nevada who need help overcoming addiction. In partnership with Mission High School, APG provides resources for these teens in need. Through the organization, clients meet with a peer recovery support specialist and have access to licensed mental health workers.
Clients in need also have access to clinical services for the individual and their family, if needed. Services include food and access to the APG boutique where they can get clothing and other needed items. The Alternative Peer Group also hosts social activities that foster “positive peer support” through non-clinical peer support. One example of this kind of program is the summer recovery overnight camp.
During May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month, the Alternative Peer Group is requesting help from the community. Donations are needed to continue the programs offered through APG. The nonprofit has partnered with Titan Brands Hospitality Group to raise funds for the nonprofit.
Titan Brands Hospitality Group currently has three restaurants in Las Vegas. Including Hussong’s Mexican Cantina in Boca Park, Hussong’s Mexican Cantina in Mandalay Place, and Slice of Vegas in The Shoppes at Mandalay Bay.
During May, patrons can purchase the drink of the month at any of these establishments, or one of the special dessert items, and 15% of the proceeds will go to the Alternative Peer Group.
Both Joe Engle and Scott Frost, CEO of Titan Brands Hospitality Group joined Talking Solutions to talk about the campaign. Frost also told his story about why mental health awareness is so important to him and his company. He also shared his personal story of why he took Titan in the direction of focusing on mental health.
