One Of The Newest Vegas Golden Knights Set To Break Record
One of the newest additions to the Vegas Golden Knights roster this year is set to break a very impressive NHL record this week if all goes well.
As I write this website post, forward Phil Kessel, #8, is playing in his 989th consecutive game which ties the record set by retired NHL defenseman Keith Yandle. If all goes well, Kessel will own the record tomorrow night when the Golden Knights take on the Sharks at the SAP Center in San Jose.
According to an article posted by staff writer Mike Zeisberger on NHL.com, Kessel has not missed a game since October 31, 2009, back when he was playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. At that time, he was recovering from a shoulder injury which kept him off the ice for the first month of that season. He began this current “ironman” streak three nights later, on November 3rd, 2009. Hasn’t missed a game since.
I started thinking about that. I pride myself on showing up for work every day that I am able, and yet, I have missed days (not counting vacation days and holidays) due to illness. I haven’t missed many because, thankfully, I have been pretty healthy. But it certainly is remarkable to have not missed a regular season game over the past 13 years.
The Vegas Golden Knights are Kessel’s fifth NHL team, having started with the Boston Bruins, then moving on to the Maple Leafs, then winning two Stanley Cups with Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins, and for the last couple of years, trying to help the youngsters in Arizona with the Coyotes.
Kessel has amassed 957 points in 1,210 NHL games, and according to Zeisberger’s article, #8 is going to keep playing “‘Til someone tells me I can’t play no more!”
