Vegas Golden Knights Win Another OT Thriller
Jack Eichel scored with only 7 seconds remaining in overtime on Sunday evening to lift the Vegas Golden Knights past the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 2-1. Then, for the second game in-a-row, the Golden Knights needed extra time to cap off a 3-2 victory Tuesday night against Washington.
If you look at Sunday night’s score sheet, you can see that Vegas outplayed and outshot the Jets at T-Mobile Arena. However, they started out their five-game road trip against the Capitals in a much more closely played game.
Vegas Golden Knights goalie Logan Thompson stopped 19-of-21 shots on goal to record the team’s fifth consecutive victory, and they had to do it in comeback fashion again. The Caps got on the board first with a power-play goal during the first five minutes of the opening frame from Marcus Johansson.
Jack Eichel did some amazing stick-handling to hold on to the puck in the Washington zone during a VGK power play later in the first period, and then wristed it past Capitals’ goalie Charlie Lindgren to tie the game 1-1.
Washington defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk put the home team back on top just about one minute into the second period, as the teams continued to trade chances without success into the latter part of the third period.
That’s when William Carrier hopped on the ice during a Vegas Golden Knights line change to receive a slick pass from William Karlsson, and wristed it in to tie the game at 2-2 with less than six minutes to play. Disaster almost struck with mere seconds left in regulation when the Capitals attacked the zone through the middle of the ice, picked up a bouncing puck and slipped it past Thompson. The goal was immediately disallowed by the referees as time had just expired.
In overtime, Jack Eichel once again showed his mastery at puck-handling, holding on to the biscuit for what seemed like an eternity until Vegas defenseman Shea Theodore got a step past Washington’s Alex Ovechkin, received the pass from Eichel, and put it past Lindgren to cap off the second consecutive overtime victory, and fifth win in-a-row, for Vegas.
The Golden Knights travel to Ottawa to take on the Senators Thursday night.
