Helpful Tips To Keep Pets Safe And Happy During Halloween
It’s Halloween time in the Las Vegas valley. Of course, that means plenty of Halloween parties for kids and adults. Additionally, trick-or-treaters will be knocking on your door or ringing your doorbell on October 31st. Obviously, pets do not enjoy all those strangers in scary costumes. Furthermore, loud music at parties may also make your pets skittish. With that in mind, American Humane offers some helpful Halloween pet safety tips to all of us.
Now, I don’t want you thinking that these are my safety tips. These Halloween pet safety tips come from an expert. His name is Dr. Thomas Edling. He’s the Chief Veterinary Officer of American Humane. You can check out their website by clicking here.
Halloween Pet Safety Tips Checklist
First, let’s start with Halloween candy. Basically, it is NOT good for pets. Don’t let them near it. Furthermore, candy or treats that contain artificial sweeteners are even more dangerous to your pets. Instead, offer them pet treats when everyone else is enjoying the sweet stuff.
Second, let’s discuss Halloween decorations. If you enjoy putting lit candles inside your jack-o-lanterns, then be sure to keep them out of walking paths. You don’t want any of your pets walking, standing, sitting, or laying down near open flames. In fact, it’s probably best to keep all Halloween decorations out of your pet’s way.
Third, Halloween parties can be a very stressful time for your pets. American Humane advises that you should keep a safe, secure, and quiet space for your pets if you’re throwing a Halloween bash this year. Obviously, this safe spot should be indoors. Keeping pets outdoors only increases the chance that your pet will freak out with all the noise and strangers and run away.
Fourth, what about trick-or-treaters on Halloween, October 31st? Dr. Edling and his staff recommend that you once again find that quiet, safe, and secure space for your pet behind closed doors. You’ll be opening and closing your front door for each group of kids coming to your house. It’s best that your pets are not tempted to head out the door when you’re busy dishing out candy. Moreover, be sure your pets have a microchip, collar, and ID tag just in case they do escape.
Does Your Pet Love Dressing In Costume During Halloween?
Finally, do you love dressing your pet in a Halloween costume? Many people do. I don’t know how much your pets love it, but you know better than anyone. So, American Humane suggests you “choose comfortable and non-restrictive costumes for your pets.”
Let’s make it a Happy Halloween for you and your pets this year.
