However, we Las Vegans don’t really start feeling those fall-like temperatures until the middle to end of October. But cooler temperatures bring the desire for comfort food. All in all, one of America’s favorites is a nice hot, gooey, grilled cheese sandwich. At this time, that grilled cheese sandwich could be dangerous. In fact, there’s a recall for Kraft American cheese slices in effect right now.
Here’s What We Know So Far About The Kraft American Cheese Recall
The Heinz Kraft Company began the recall following complaints from several customers. Apparently, a strip of the plastic wrapper on Kraft American cheese singles sticks to the cheese. That’s according to an article by Dee-Ann Durbin, an Associated Press business writer, posted on Fox5News.com.
For the most part, only six people report choking or gagging on the thin strip of film left on the cheese slice. However, that was enough for the folks at Kraft Heinz to begin a voluntary recall of more than 83,000 cases of Kraft American cheese slices.
Check your refrigerator and see if you have a 16-ounce package of Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Cheese Product in there. If it specifically shows a “Best When Used By” date from January 10, 2024 through January 27, 2024, that package is part of the recall. Additionally, if you have a 3-pound multi-pack of that same product with “Best When Used By” date from January 9, 2024 through January 13, 2024, it is also part of the recall.
What You Should Do If You Have This Product
First of all, if you currently have one of these Kraft products in your home, do not eat them. Instead, you should return them to the store where you made the purchase for a full refund. Per the Dee-Ann Durbin article on Fox5News.com, you can also call the Kraft Heinz company at 1-800-280-8252 to see if your cheese slices are part of the recall. They can also give you more information about a refund.
So now what are you going to do when you’re craving a hot and gooey grilled cheese sandwich? Of course, Kraft Heinz is not the only company who makes American cheese. Heck, they don’t even call it cheese. It’s a “cheese food product.” But it melts so well between those two toasty pieces of bread, doesn’t it?
Maybe now is a good time to experiment with other types of cheese on your next sandwich. May we suggest Monterey Jack, Gruyere, Sharp Cheddar, Fontina, or Pepper Jack if you like it a little bit spicy. I’m getting hungry. You?
Your Top 5 Comfort Foods On Cold Winter Nights
On Monday evening, I threw out a question on our Facebook page, asking our listeners what their favorite comfort foods were on cold, damp nights. We received lots of replies. Some answers were a bit surprising, but for the most part, the suggestions included warm, stick-to-the-ribs type meals.
Las Vegas Winters Are Pretty Mild Compared To Other Regions Of The Nation
Compared to most regions of the U.S.A., our winters are very mild. Every few years we may see some snowflakes here in the Las Vegas valley, but it is pretty rare. I have lived here since 1994, and I have never had to shovel my driveway. I do remember one year, I think around 2006, we had enough snow to accumulate on the roads and freeways and driving into the studios that day was kind of treacherous. Having spent seven years going to high school and college in Vermont, I was able to handle it, no problem.
Basically, we usually get a week or two of really cold nights which hover in the low 30s or upper 20s. But this winter, it seems we have had more than just a couple of weeks of frigid nights. We have also had quite a few more rainy or overcast days and nights too. It really feels like winter around here lately. Heck, we actually had snow here in some parts of the valley on Monday. And those snow-covered mountains surrounding Las Vegas make for some incredible views. I bet you've clicked a photo or two of the mountains near your home.
Las Vegans Favorite Comfort Foods On A Cold, Wintery Night
So, this is what led me to ask the question. On a cold, damp winter night like we have experienced recently, what is your favorite comfort food? What is your "go-to" meal. If you would like to see some of the comments for yourself, CLICK HERE. There were lots of delicious replies, but here are the top five comfort foods from our informal Facebook survey.
5) Pork, Ham, Sausage

4) Macaroni & Cheese or Pasta

3) Beef Stew or Beef Pot Roast

You arrive home from work later that day and you revel in that amazing aroma wafting through your house. Grab those bowls, ladle out the stew, pot roast, or whatever you slow-cooked, and dig in.
2) Chili
Lynne Mitchell via Getty ImagesOh man, the different styles of chili you can enjoy all across our country. Some use beans. Some just use meat. Most use tomatoes, but some folks prefer white chicken chili. There are some delicious vegetarian and vegan recipes out there too. Whether you like to mix in cheese, saltines, or scoop your chili out of a bread bowl, it's always a great comfort food on a cold, winter day or night.
1) Soup
matthewennisphotography via Getty ImagesThis was the big winner in our informal survey by almost a 3 to 1 margin! But there were so many different choices in the type of soup folks were dishing out. From hearty potato soups and chowders, to chicken and vegetable soup, to a big bowl of French onion soup covered in melted, gooey cheese. Some folks just like to open a can of Progresso. Whichever is your favorite, soup was king. Stay warm and cozy!
