Shishito Peppers: One Of My Favorite Low Calorie Snacks
I don’t know about you, but I am always looking for ways to eat healthy. In addition, my doctor keeps telling me to shed some pounds. What’s new, right? With this in mind, I have to tell you about one of my favorite low-calorie snacks. In fact, I just sauteed up a bunch of shishito peppers.
Shishito Peppers: My Favorite Low-Calorie Snack
I first saw Shishito Peppers served as an appetizer at a local casino steak house. This was about 20 years ago. They were delicious! Best of all, they’re usually not very spicy. Therefore, everyone at the table can enjoy a few.
More recently, you can see shishito peppers in the produce aisle at local grocery stores. Every once in a while, I buy a bag and sauté them up at home. Surprisingly, they are very easy to cook.
Basically, I pour the entire bag into a mixing bowl. I pour olive oil all over them to give them a good coating. A pinch or two of salt. Maybe a sprinkle of garlic powder. Add some cracked black pepper and give it a good mix. Let them sit for about 15 minutes.
Afterwards, pour a tablespoon of sesame oil or another good sautéing oil in a wok or deep-sided pan. Heat on high. Do not let the oil burn. Once the oil is hot, pour all the peppers in. You may want to use a splash guard over the pan while sautéing.
Let the skins of the shishito peppers blister but keep stirring. If you are cooking in front of guests, you may want to learn how to do that “chefy” wrist-flip on the pan to keep the peppers rotating.
Shishito Peppers: Great As A Snack Or A Side Dish
On the whole, I serve them up in a big bowl and let folks dig in. You may also want to put an empty bowl on the table in which folks can throw the pepper stems. Most shishito peppers are not spicy. However, once in a while, you’ll get a spicy one, so warn your guests. Unfortunately, you won’t know it’s a spicy pepper until after you bite into it.
Last night, I sautéed a bag of Melissa’s shishito peppers. Found them in the produce aisle at my neighborhood Albertson’s. According to the packaging, 12 shishito peppers are only 20 calories! You and your guests can munch out without guilt. Enjoy!
