If you’ve ever owned and loved a pet, you know how much it hurts to lose that family member. With this in mind, our sympathies go out to the dedicated members of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department K-9 Unit. They lost a beloved member of their team earlier today.

K-9 Unit Police Dog Kimura Passes Away From Medical Complications

Police dog Kimura joined the LVMPD K-9 Unit back in 2019. According to an article by Justine Verastigue on KTNV.com, Kimura is a 6-year old Dutch Shepard police dog. K-9 Unit officers took him to the emergency clinic during the early morning hours. Unfortunately, Kimura passed away.

What’s more, Kimura is the survivor of a violent stabbing attack. In April 2020, Kimura was severely injured while protecting fellow officers. He would go on to receive the Purple Heart. Verastigue’s article quotes LVMPD K-9 Unit officers who praise Kimura for apprehending countless suspects through the years.

Kimura’s handler and the rest of Metro’s K-9 Section, SWAT, and Major Violators teams are mourning him today. You can view a Twitter post featuring a photo of Kimura by clicking here.

K-9 Units Across The U.S.A.

There are now more than 7,000 K-9 teams which are part of around 3,250 K-9 departments across the U.S.A. That’s pretty incredible. A Google search reveals those K-9 teams include somewhere around 50,000 police dogs. They are highly intelligent and well-trained. Just like their human handlers and team members, they put their lives on the line every day.

German Shepards are the dog breed most commonly utilized as police dogs. To enumerate, they are very intelligent. In addition, they are easy to train. Furthermore, they are large enough to bring down big, tough, suspects.

Surprisingly, the Guinness World Record holder for “biggest police dog,” is not a German Shepard. Per Wikipedia.org, it’s a Saint Bernard named Benedictine who weighs in at over 357 pounds! Yikes! Imagine an angry Benedictine chasing you down.

Let’s take a moment to remember our city’s brave police dog, Kimura, and all the other brave K-9 Team dogs and officers around the nation.
