Assistance League Earns Three ‘Best Of Las Vegas’ Gold Awards
For almost 50 years, Assistance League of Las Vegas has been serving children in need here in Southern Nevada. With about 350 members (and counting), the Las Vegas nonprofit is a 100-percent volunteer organization. This allows every dollar they earn to go right back into helping the children in need. The organization’s specialized programs also give community members a chance to donate their time and talents, while meeting new friends and giving back.
Assistance League of Las Vegas was recently honored with three Best of Las Vegas gold awards from the Las Vegas Review-Journal: Best Nonprofit, Best Place to Volunteer, and Best Thrift Shop. The organization has many programs here in Las Vegas that help our school-ages children succeed in school.
Operation School Bell is one such program. On average, this program provides about 8,000 CCSD students with new clothing every school year. Assistance League of Las Vegas works with school counselors to identify students in need. The organization invites students and their counselors to come and shop for new clothes. Students receive pants, shirts, jackets and more for the new school year.
New clothing increases students incentives for regular school attendance, which contributes to higher academic performance. Assistance League also has a program called AL’s Closet. They have clothes available for students right on their school’s campus. Currently there are 70 AL’s Closets in our CCSD schools.
Other programs through Assistance League include “Kids On The Block”, an interactive puppet show that talks to kids about bullying, peer-pressure, divorce and other difficult topics, and Operation Bear Hug, which provides bears to children and adults in crisis or times of duress. The organization also offers college scholarships every year to students in need.
Assistance League‘s award-winning thrift shop has been named Best Of Las Vegas multiple years in a row. They have clothes, accessories, housewares and furniture. The organization also offers a “Top Drawer” section with high end and designer labels. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Located on the corner of Torrey Pines and Charleston.
Diana Anderson, President of Assistance League of Las Vegas, was a guest on Talking Solutions to talk about the organization and its various programs.
