Friday Flashback: My Favorite Big Game Moment
The excitement is building for this Sunday’s big game between Kansas City and Philadelphia at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Which team will win? Which player will be named MVP? How many chicken wings will I eat?
These, and other extremely important questions will all be answered in due time. But, as we plan for all those big game parties here in Las Vegas, I started thinking about Super Bowl games in years past. So, for “Flashback Friday,” here is my favorite big game moment.
First, I must apologize to all Buffalo Bills fans, and to their field goal kicker at that time, Scott Norwood. He was a great kicker, and he has been a stand-up guy about what happened in that game. I have a lot of respect for Norwood and Buffalo fans, who had to suffer through four consecutive big game losses. I am not trying to rub salt in the wounds.
I was a big New York Giants football fan, and when they went to the big game in 1991, I was thrilled. The Giants got there with great defense, led by #56, Hall of Fame linebacker, Lawrence Taylor. The Bills got there with an explosive “no-huddle offense,” led by their Hall of Fame quarterback, Jim Kelly.
Back in those days, the big game was usually a big letdown when it came to excitement. Most of them were big blowouts. But, in 1991, Buffalo and New York gave the fans a well-played, hard fought, very close game. In fact, according to Wikipedia, it was the first NFL championship game in which neither team committed a turnover.
New York led by just one point when Buffalo began their final offensive drive of the game from their own 10-yeard line with just 2:16 remaining in regulation time. Jim Kelly and running back Thurman Thomas took the Bills on their backs and led them down to New York’s 29-yard line, with just 7 seconds remaining on the clock. The game would be decided by the success or failure of a 47-yard field goal attempt by Buffalo place-kicker, Scott Norwood.
