The group Bananarama hit the nail on the head when it comes to this time of year in Las Vegas: “It’s a cruel, cruel summer!”
But as a resident of this hot summer city, we all seem to find ways to cool off during June, July and August. One of those ways to stay cold on the hottest days and nights is to go ice skating with friends or family.
I have been a hockey fan almost all of my life, and I started playing ice hockey with a bunch of good friends back in 2005. We joined a Wednesday night league at the Pepsi Ice Arena located inside the Fiesta – Rancho Hotel & Casino. The hotel and casino are now closed, but the ice arena is still operating. They host birthday parties and events, hockey leagues, offer skating lessons, and also open up for public skating.
If you do decide to get out on the ice to cool off, remember that even though it is hot outside of the rink, they keep the arena very cold so the ice does not melt. Don’t try and step on the ice in shorts and a t-shirt. You will regret it! I should also warn you that falling on the ice can really hurt. That ice is not only slippery, it’s also HARD! If you have knee pads, wrist guards and a helmet, I would advise wearing them, even if you consider yourself a good skater.
Here are the three best places to go ice skating on a hot summer day or night in the Las Vegas Valley!
