I remember being fascinated with the thought of leap year, and a leap day, when I was a kid. At the time I thought “how cool” it would be to be a leap baby! Then I thought “whoa – a birthday party only every four years? Hard pass. Then my mom explained to me that you still celebrate, but on the 28th. WHEW!
Leap Year: How Can You Just Add An Extra Day To A Year?
How do we get one extra day every four years? A friend of mine tried to tell me years ago, “it’s just simple math.” For YOU it is, you’re an economist. For lay people though, here’s the breakdown:
The Gregorian calendar is what we earth people use. That calendar goes with the earth’s orbit around the sun. That is generally 365 days, and some change. After four years, that extra change in the year’s pocket adds up to one day, every four years. So we add it to February, the shortest month of the year, every four years.
