As We Celebrate Our Independence, We Can Help A Las Vegas Military Veteran
The 4th of July in America! Fireworks, barbecues, pool parties, and picnics in the park. It’s a time to celebrate our nation’s independence. However, it’s also a good time to remember those who have sacrificed to give us this independence and freedom. In addition, you can help out a severely injured Las Vegas military veteran this weekend.
The Story Of One Injured Las Vegas Military Veteran
Blaine Sullivan is a true hometown hero, born and raised in “The Battle Born State.” In fact, he grew up right here in Las Vegas. In 2009, at the age of 18, he joins the U.S. Army. He becomes a member of “2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.”
Army Specialist Sullivan and his team see plenty of very dangerous action while serving in Afghanistan. According to an article about Sullivan on HFOTUSA.com, he lost his right leg and severely injured his right arm in 2010. He was carrying an injured member of his team to safety when he was hit by an IED (improvised explosive device).
Difficulties Endured By This Las Vegas Military Veteran
Although Sullivan can wear his prosthetic leg, it is still very uncomfortable for him. He prefers to use his wheelchair while at home. However, his current home is not wheelchair accessible.
For that reason, the national non-profit organization Homes For Our Troops is building Sullivan a specially adapted home. He wants to remain right here in his hometown of Las Vegas. Sullivan’s mother Stacey, and his son John, will join him in this new house.
In this case, Homes For Our Troops is building a house which features pull-down shelving, lowered sinks, countertops, and stove top. With this in mind, Sullivan will be able to easily roll his wheelchair under these kitchen features. Now, he will be able to prepare meals without much difficulty.
You Can Help Prepare Sullivan’s Home On Saturday
There will be a “community volunteer day” on July 8th at the site of Sullivan’s new house. The Volunteer Day event will take place at 6645 Mustang Street, Las Vegas, Nevada, 89131. Homes For Our Troops is asking that you help landscape Retired SPC Sullivan’s specially adapted house. The event starts at 8am, with check-in at 7:30am.
Be sure to bring your own work gloves to help out this Las Vegas military veteran. You’ll get an HFOT T-shirt and lunch will be provided.
