Oakland A’s To Las Vegas Will Be One Expensive Move
The folks in Oakland are rightfully upset with the fact that another one of their professional sports franchises is making the move to Las Vegas. They may become even more upset when they find out how much money the Oakland A’s organization is spending to make this expensive move to Southern Nevada. (Updated March 28, 2024)
How Much Will The A’s Spend On Their Move To Las Vegas?
So how much are they willing to spend to build a new home in Las Vegas? According to an article written by Kyle J. Paine on 8NewsNow.com,the Oakland A’s have told officials in Nevada that they will spend at least ONE BILLION DOLLARS (that’s billion with a “b”) of their own money to build a new stadium in our region. Per Paine’s report, that large sum does not take into account the purchase of land for the site of the proposed new baseball stadium, nor does it factor in the cost of the move to our desert city from the Bay Area.
The Oakland A’s are hoping our state and it’s residents will cough up another half a billion dollars to help build their new home. 8NewsNow.com investigators are not sure how that will happen, since Governor Joe Lombardo has stated that Nevadans will not have to pay any new taxes to fund a new stadium for the A’s.
You are probably already aware that Clark County recently imposed a room tax on Las Vegas hotels to help pay for the construction of Allegiant Stadium, where the former Oakland Raiders, now the Las Vegas Raiders, play their home games. So, that tax revenue is already accounted for.
Will Southern Nevada Residents Have To Pay For This Expensive Move?
Paine’s article quotes Clark County Commission Chairman Jim Gibson as stating that the proposed site of the new home for the A’s on Tropicana Avenue is not in a redevelopment area, so that type of government funding will not be available for the project either.
So, as you can see, this is going to be an extremely expensive move for this Major League Baseball franchise. For those reasons, the Oakland A’s have hired financial analyst Jeremy Aguero. He recently worked on the financial plans for building Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and on bringing Formula One racing to Sin City.
He is very upbeat about the plans for this project. He told 8NewsNow.com that the A’s are not only making plans to build a 30,000 seat baseball stadium, but they are also planning a “sports entertainment district” that will surround the stadium.
Aguero is quoted in Paine’s article: “I think there will be a net positive fiscal benefit for the taxpayers in the state of Nevada as a result of the stadium being constructed, [b]ecause the amount of taxes that will be generated is greater than the amount of the cost of the public contribution.”
There are some very difficult financial decisions yet to be made in this saga for both sides. Baseball fans will just have to “wait and see. Now, feel free to scroll down for more content which may interest you.
