When you live in Las Vegas, you get to know a little something about poker, and poker requires bluffing, and in real life, bluffing is dishonest. So, does that make Nevada one of the most dishonest states in the country?

Gambling.com recently conducted a research study to determine the most dishonest states in the United States of America. It seems like states with smaller populations were some of the most dishonest in our nation. How did they determine this? They utilized five different metrics, which they weighted equally, to come up with a final score.

The five different metrics involved monthly Google searches per 100,000 people for: tips on lying, tips on bluffing, Ashley Madison, which is a website for married people seeking an affair, the state’s overall divorce rate, and how the state is graded by the Center for Public Integrity.

Before we get to this study’s seven most dishonest states in America, let’s see how states ranked in each metric. Alaska leads the way in searches for “Tips on Lying.” Vermont was second, Wyoming third, Hawaii placing fourth, and Delaware rounding out the top 5 in this category.

Wyoming ranks first in searches for “Tips on Bluffing,” with Vermont second, North Dakota third, Delaware fourth, and Alaska fifth. Seems like this category goes to places where it is very cold for a very long time. Maybe there’s not much else to do but play poker.

Which states top the list for most searches per 100,000 people on Ashley Madison, where married people seek illicit affairs? Virginia ranks first, Colorado, Connecticut, Nebraska and Illinois placing second through fifth respectively.

Maine has the highest divorce rate in the USA, followed closely by our home state, Nevada. New Mexico, West Virginia and Oklahoma place third through fifth respectively.

Finally, which states get the lowest integrity scores from the Center for Public Integrity? North Dakota is the most untrustworthy state according to this website. Wyoming places second, Michigan third, Delaware fourth, and South Dakota fifth.

  • 7) New Hampshire

    New Hampshire State House

New Hampshire is one of three New England states which rank as one of the seven most dishonest states in the nation. What’s in the water up there? Their final index score, based on all five metrics combined, came to 56.6

  • 6) Nevada

    Nevada State Capital building

Our home state ranks sixth in this study, with a final index score of 58.2 out of 100. I always wonder if all of those searches for tips on lying, bluffing, having an affair, etc., are from people visiting Nevada, or by those of us who reside in the Silver State. As far as I can tell, this study does not take that into account.

  • 5) Delaware

    Delaware State Capital building

The second smallest state in America behind only Rhode Island, Delaware hits the fifth spot in this study of most dishonest states in the Union. Their final index score of 60 out of 100 had a lot to do with their place in the top 5 for searches in the metrics for “Tips on Lying” and “Tips on Bluffing.”

  • 4) North Dakota

    North Dakota State Capital building

It sure is cold in North Dakota, and winter lasts a very long time. They scored very high for searches for “Tips on Bluffing,” and they had the worst score in the nation from the Center for Public Integrity. They take fourth place in this study. They had a final index score of 60.2.

  • 3) Maine

    Maine State Capital building

Maine is the second New England state to climb into the top seven in this study, based “mainly” on having the highest divorce rate in the country. One in seven couples there end their marriage prematurely. They had a final index score of 64 out of 100.

  • 2) Vermont

    Vermont State Capital building

Vermont is the third New England state in the seven most dishonest states in the USA. Their final index score of 75.3 out of 100 is due mostly to having the second most searches for “Tips on Lying” and the second most searches for “Tips on Bluffing.”

  • 1) Wyoming

    Wyoming State Capital building

Hard to believe that Wyoming, one of the least populous states in our country, is ranked as the most dishonest state in America. But, they ranked first in most searches for “Tips on Bluffing,” and third in most searches for “Tips on Lying.” Wyoming also had the second worst score in the USA from the Center for Public Integrity. They accumulated a final index score of 80.5. Congratulations??
