Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey just announced that she will be bringing a brand new residency exclusively to Las Vegas. This will be her first residency in Sin City since the The Butterfly Returns, which ended in February 2020. This residency promises to deliver a unique experience to concert goers in Vegas. And the Park MGM is the perfect place to do that. It has been the venue of choice for many other artists who want to custom tailor the sound and visual effects to their specific show. Carey made the residency announcement today on her social media pages.

What We Know About The New Residency

It’s called Mariah Carey: The Celebration of Mimi Live in Las Vegas. And will celebrate the anniversary the iconic album, The Emancipation of Mimi. Released in April 2005, the album is on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. And it is one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century (usatoday.com). The record scored eight Grammy nominations and three wins in 2006 at the 48th Grammy Awards.

Almost exactly 19 years after the album’s release, Mariah Carey: The Celebration of Mimi Live in Las Vegas will land at the Park MGM’s Dolby Live for eight nights. Show dates are April 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 24, 26 & 27. When it comes to what to expect from this residency, it will include many fan favorites from The Emancipation of Mimi. In addition to hits from her other albums. And Mariah Carey has a huge catalog of music to choose from. She could fill up an entire setlist just by playing her 19 number one hits.

Mariah Carey Could Bring Special Guests To The Shows

What’s special about The Emancipation of Mimi album is the number of collaborations the project included. Names like Kanye West, Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams contributed to various tracks on the album. Whether or not any of these people will join Carey on this residency remains to be known.

And speaking of potential surprise guests, Carey has spoken recently about her daughter, Monroe, being in the studio with her. And has gushed about how talented the 12-year old is. Not surprising, she’s the daughter of not only Mariah Carey, but also of rapper Nick Cannon. And Monroe has joined her famous mother before on stage singing Carey’s hit Always Be My Baby (people.com). Maybe mom will bring her kids along on part of her residency. And maybe we’ll get to see the next generation of Carey talented at the show.

In any case, fans are not only excited about seeing Mariah Carey perform live again, but also looking forward to just seeing her. She looked amazing when she appeared at the 66th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

What We Think This Residency Might Include

Looking at the list of Mariah’s fan favorites from The Emancipation of Mimi, as well as hits from her other albums, this is what we think we can look forward to from this residency. – Wendy Rush

  • It's Like That

Starting with the hits from the namesake album. This was Carey’s first single from The Emancipation of Mimi. It peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 16. We think this would be a perfect song to kick off her Celebration of Mimi Live in Las Vegas residency. Because the girl is coming to party.

  • We Belong Together

The second single from The Emancipation of Mimi. And, having made the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, it’s still one of the most famous of Mariah Carey’s hits. It won all kinds of awards and is undoubtedly going to be on this setlist.

  • Shake It Off

Taylor was still learning to drive a car when Mariah Carey was shaking it off. This is the third single from The Emancipation of Mimi. The song peaked at number two on the charts. But only because We Belong Together was sitting at number one at the same time.

  • Don't Forget About Us

This was the fourth single to be released from The Emancipation of Mimi. It also topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and was nominated for two Grammy Awards.

  • Vision Of Love

Vision of Love was the debut single from Carey’s debut album. And the song that showed her growl prowess and ability to noodle. It went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990 and stayed for four weeks. Safe to say she’ll bring this one back for the residency.

  • Dreamlover

This was the song that had everyone looking at each other thinking did she just break glass with that note? And with Carey’s five-octave range, she probably could have. This is the lead single from the 1993 album Music Box. This was Carey’s seventh song to top the Billboard Hot 100. Which it did in 1993 and stayed there for eight weeks.

  • Hero

The second single from Music Box. It was Carey’s eighth chart-topping song. And she almost gave it away to Gloria Estefan! We’re glad she didn’t. And can we just say, this video of her live performance of the song gives us goosebumps.

  • Honey

Um, yes please. This is such a fun song at a show because of its so danceable. It spent three weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1993.

  • Fantasy

Another song that opens with that whistle range and Carey’s classic doo-doos. This upbeat hit was her fifth single from Daydream and had us all bopping along in our cars. It spent eight weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot in 1995. And we can definitely expect this one on her residency setlist.

  • Always Be My Baby

I think it was her playful scatting in the beginning of this song that made us love her even more than we did before. This is from Carey’s 1995 album Daydream. The song sat comfortably on the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks in the number one spot.

  • Someday

Ah, the anthem of every girl who ever got screwed over by a guy. This was another hit from Carey’s debut studio album, Mariah Carey. It went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed for two weeks.

  • Emotions

The first single from Carey’s second album, also called Emotions. Many of us didn’t know what the whistle register was before hearing the notes Carey belted on this song. And we think she’ll be belting them in person at the Las Vegas shows.

  • I'll Be There

Mariah Carey did such an amazing job with this song that we forgot it was a cover. Her rendition of the Jackson 5 hit stayed at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in 1992.

  • Touch My Body

This song is just too much fun not to do. It’s from her 2007 E=MC² album. And the single became Carey’s eighteenth number one song when it stayed at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in 2008.

  • Love Takes Time

Not sure this song will be on the setlist for the upcoming residency, but it was another number one song for Carey. From her debut album, it spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990.

  • One Sweet Day

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention this one. Because it spent a whopping 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was famously a duet with Boyz II Men. So if she does do it for this residency, we’re really hoping the guys come back to do it with her!
