Award winning singer and songwriter Irene Cara died November 25, 2022. At the time of announcing her death, the cause of it was not known. It has now been revealed that the Grammy and Oscar winning star died of hypertension and high cholesterol.

According to TMZ, the official cause of death was Arteriosclerotic and Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease.

Shortly after she died, the announcement of Irene Cara’s death was made on social media. The announcement was publicly released by her publicist Judith A. Moose.

“It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara. The Academy Award-winning actress, singer, songwriter and producer passed away in her Florida home” (people.com).

In addition to hypertension and high cholesterol, an official report from the Pinellas County Medical Examiner also revealed that Irene Cara was diabetic, People magazine reports. Though diabetes has not officially been linked to the death of Cara.

Irene Cara rose to fame in the the movie Fame. Cara‘s role of Coco Hernandez gained her a lot of attention as an actress. She got even more accolades for writing the theme song for the movie. Her title hit Fame went to number one on the music charts in several countries.

It was only three years later that Cara made history again with another movie soundtrack. Flashdance landed Cara two awards for the title track Flashdance…What A Feeling. For her performance, Cara won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1984. The same year she took home an Oscar for Best Original Song for the writing the hit.

Irene Cara died in her home in Florida. She was only 63 years old. And while she’s mostly known for her two award winning songs, she had more hits. Here are a few that all landed in the top 40 on the charts. – Wendy Rush, 96.3 KKLZ
