Students from all over the Las Vegas Valley will be competing in the first annual North Las Vegas “School Mariachi Competition” this Saturday, March 4th. The event will take place in the amphitheater at Craig Ranch Regional Park, from 8am to 8pm.
I don’t know about you, but I really love mariachi music. I did not grow up listening to that style of music in New York City. However, once I moved to California in the mid-80’s, and then here to Las Vegas in 1994, I grew to enjoy this festive music. I played the trumpet in junior high and high school, so I can relate to the horn section in these mariachi bands. Maybe I’ll take my trumpet out of the closet one of these days, start practicing, get my lip in shape, and get involved with mariachi music.
But enough of my dreams. Let’s focus on the dreams of some of our middle school and high school students right here in the Las Vegas Valley. Bring your family to the amphitheater at Craig Ranch this Saturday and you will be treated to great performances by mariachis from across the valley. Student bands in the 1A and 2A middle school and high school levels will be competing for top honors at this competition. The event is FREE and open to the public. It’s a family friendly day at the park for music, fun, food trucks and more!
I checked out some videos of a couple of the teams that will be performing this Saturday, and they sound great! You can watch these videos too by CLICKING HERE.
