Parents Up In Arms Over CCSD Attendance Policy
There are many parents of CCSD students who are up in arms and have voiced their concerns over attendance policies which may get their sick kids kicked out of their chosen school.
According to an article by Shakeria Hawkins posted on KTNV.com, students who attend schools outside of their residential district are part of the COSA, (County Change of School Assignment) program. Parents must sign a contract which stipulates that COSA students may not miss more than 10 excused, or unexcused, days of school, or they will have to return to a school in their residential district.
Now that we are in the midst of the cold and flu season, and we are seeing a rising number of cases of COVID, RSV, Strep, and other illnesses, parents are worried and want to keep their kids at home while they are sick. It sometimes takes up to ten days to get over one of these illnesses, if things go well. What if they don’t? Are CCSD officials going to kick students out of the COSA program for doing the right thing and staying home when they are ill? Or would CCSD officials rather have those sick kids at school passing on those illnesses? Parents have taken to social media to complain about the absentee policy amidst current concerns over spreading these viruses at school.
Per Hawkins’ article, it is not CCSD which sets the absentee policy for this program, it is the State of Nevada Department of Education which does so. “Absenteeism was tracked across the state, and students’ success rate is measured by the total percentage of students who are absent for more than ten percent of their enrolled days.” Many parents feel that there should be a new policy written which takes into account COVID, RSV, and other viruses, which have become prevalent the past few years. They feel a new absentee policy for CCSD COSA students should encourage both good attendance, and good health habits.
We will see how CCSD, and state officials, respond to these concerned parents.
