Saturday 03/05/22: Casey Kasem counts down the 40 biggest hits in the U.S.A. on March 5, 1988, when “Hairspray” was new in movie theaters!
“Hairspray” was written and directed by John Waters. It starred Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono, Jerry Stiller, Leslie Ann Powers, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Michael St. Gerard, and Ruth Brown. Although it was only a mild success at the box office, it gained in popularity during the early 90s after it’s release to home video. It is now considered a “cult classic,” and it was ranked at #444 on Empire magazine’s 2008 list of the 500 greatest movies of all time.
In 2002 this movie was adapted into a Broadway music which went on to win eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. A second film version of “Hairspray” was adapted from the stage musical and was released in 2007. It starred John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Byrnes, Brittany Snow, Queen Latifah, James Marsden, Zac Efron, and Nikki Blonsky.
