A new documentary about the Beach Boys will be released on May 24.

I am a sucker for music documentaries. Even on bands and artists I am really not that familiar with, or know, for that matter. But I love seeing the process, and behind the scenes. I have a few favorites that I'll share with you

The Beach Boys New Documentary

The official trailer for the new Beach Boys documentary is out, and it looks great. It debuts on Disney Plus on May 24. But you can take a sneak peak right here.

The documentary includes a lot of previously unreleased footage. And it looks like there are a lot of interviews with the original band members: Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston. There is also rare, archival footage, and interviews with members (and brothers) who have passed away: Carl and Dennis Wilson.

"The Beach Boys" features several other artists, who talk about the popularity, and phenomenon, of the Beach Boys - Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder, Don Was. Their popularity, and appeal was of gargantuan proportion. In the trailer, Rock historian, Josh Kun says, the Beach Boys "were participating in the creation of a California Dream."

Sadly, Brian Wilson is suffering from dementia. His wife was his primary caregiver, until her death not too long ago. His primary caregiver is now his longtime publicist and manager, Jean Sievers. Along with his  business manager, LeeAnn Hard.

Here's hoping the documentary does Brian Wilson justice. But I'm sure it will.

The Beach Boys Now

Sadly, Brian Wilson is suffering from dementia. His wife was his primary caregiver, until her death not too long ago. His primary caregiver is now his longtime publicist and manager, Jean Sievers. Along with his  business manager, LeeAnn Hard.

Here's hoping the documentary does Brian Wilson justice. But I'm sure it will.

The remaining band members aren't slowing down anytime soon. A new book about the Beach Boys has been released, and they will also tour extensively throughout 2024. They will be at Harrah's in Laughlin, Nevada, April 27th.

If you love music documentaries like I do, here are some you won't want to miss. They are about the actual musicians, singers, and studios behind the greatest bands.

The Wrecking Crew: 2008

The Wrecking Crew were considered the very best musicians. They could play anything! They played behind some of the biggest artists, and hit songs out there. They read music like most musicians didn't. SO bands would go in and record with them, because they could rehearse, and record. It saved money on studio time. By the way, Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Dr. John - all part of the Wrecking Crew at one time.

Standing in The Shadows Of Motown: 2002

The Funk Brothers were the the wrecking crew of Motown, but they never really got their due. Probably because they played behind some of the best Motown artists: The Temptations, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, and so many more. And they were black, during a time that was very hard for anyone of color. It's an exceptional look at some stellar musicians.

20 Feet From Stardom: 2013

20 feet is about the distance from the backup singers to the center stage. That is what this is about. Some of the best backup singers of all time. Those voices that made many hit songs as big as they are! Merry Clayton, Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Luther Vandross. Merry Clayton sang one of the biggest, and most popular riffs, for one of the biggest rock bands of all time - The Rolling Stones. The story is great, and she and Mick talk about it in this documentary.

Echo In the Canyon: 2018

Jakob Dylan is kind of your host, and the late Tom Petty is featured prominently. It's about the the Laurel Canyon music scene in the mid 60's. The Mamas and the Papas, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield. The documentary has a cool vibe, and it's really fun to go back to that time.

Sound City: 2013

Some of the biggest and best albums were recorded in this very famous Los Angeles studio. Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, Rick Springfield, Working Class Dog, Foreigner, Double Vision, Nirvana, Nevermind.  Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters heads up this documentary, and it's a lot of fun. There was also a new song from Stevie Nicks that came from this documentary.
