A yellow post-it note marks "Tax Day" on April 15th in this close-up photo of a calendar.

Tax Day is quickly approaching here in the United States. Hopefully, you have already filed your 2023 tax return. Furthermore, we hope you have already received a nice refund. Or you expect to receive that refund shortly. If you had to pay more to the Internal Revenue Service than you have already paid, then we feel for you.

Here’s What You Need To Know If You File On Tax Day

If you are a procrastinator, and you’re waiting until the last moment to file your return, then the tunes below should help you survive the day. Remember, you can also request an extension from the I.R.S. If you choose to do that, you will have until October 15th to file your full return.

Incidentally, there is no financial penalty for filing an extension. But make sure you don’t skip a year. That’s when the penalties and fines start to add up quickly. Either way, make sure your tax return or your extension form are postmarked by April 15th to avoid fines and penalties.

The History of Income Tax Day

So when did we, as Americans, have to start paying taxes on our income? A quick internet search reveals that a plan was originally formulated during the War of 1812 against England. But before it could be passed into law, hostilities ended and there was no longer a need to impose the tax.

The next major war in the United States came later that century. You guessed it, The Civil War. One of our most renowned leaders, President Abraham Lincoln, introduced the first personal income tax in the U.S.A. in 1861 to help fund the Union’s war effort. That’s according to an article by Phillip Nieto on FoxBusiness.comHowever, Lincoln’s “flat tax” was repealed in 1872.

Fast forward to 1913 when Congress ratified the 16th amendment. That’s when our government began taxing our income. Subsequently, corporate taxes were also instituted.

In the meantime, while you’re feverishly working to complete that tax return, enjoy these six great songs below.

(Updated April 11, 2024)

  • Money For Nothing - Dire Straits

The biggest hit of all time for this English band, with help from superstar, Sting of The Police. Although the lyrics are about rock stars who get paid lots of money for just being rock stars, the title might actually describe how you feel about paying taxes.

  • I Fought The Law - The Clash

This was a big hit in the 1960’s for the American band, The Bobby Fuller Four. The song was originally written by Sonny Curtis of Buddy Holly’s band, The Crickets, who recorded the song after that rock legend passed away. The Clash covered the tune in the late 70s while they were working on their second album. If you try and fight the IRS, they will most likely win.

  • She Works Hard For The Money - Donna Summer

This was a big MTV hit and pop chart hit for the “Queen of Disco,” Donna Summer. Disco was over by 1983 when this song was released, but the song definitely struck a chord with many hard-working Americans.

  • Money - Pink Floyd

This English progressive rock group did not score very many pop chart hits during their prime, but this was their first top 40 hit in the U.S.A. It still rings true to this day. You have to love the way the band used familiar sound effects to create the rhythm track for the song. Clinking coins, a cash register, paper tearing, and an old-style adding machine. Very creative.

  • Money, Money, Money - ABBA

This was the follow-up single to ABBA’s best-seller of all time here in the United States, “Dancing Queen.” This song did very well throughout Europe, but here in America, it only managed to reach #56. However, superstar actress Meryl Streep performs the tune in the hit film, Mamma Mia!

  • Taxman - The Beatles

Wait for it…BOOM! You knew we had to include this classic from “The Fab Four.” It is the only hit song I know of that actually refers to the tax collector. They really do hit the nail on the head when it comes to how most of us feel about paying taxes. Crank it up!
