Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Robin Lehner and his wife have filed for bankruptcy in Nevada, citing up to $50 million in debts due to dozens of creditors.
The life and career of Robin Lehner has seen its hare of ups-and-downs. A second-round pick of the Ottawa Senators in 2009, Lehner showed a lot of promise going into the NHL at age 19, but it slowed a bit, which led to a trade to the Buffalo Sabres – which changed his life forever.
Lehner dealt with substance and mental health issues during his time in Upstate New York, but after leaving the team and seeking help for both issues, he revitalized his career in New York, with the Islanders.
After successful stints with New York, Chicago and Las Vegas, his life has taken another turn. This time, it involves him, his wife, and millions of dollars in debt.
The Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing offers a glimpse into the couple’s financial problems, including money owed to no fewer than 50 people and companies, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. They filed for bankruptcy Dec. 30, months after a Wisconsin company sued Lehner for $4 million, claiming he and his father failed to make any payments last year on a business loan.
Both Lehner and his father, Michael, are listed as principal members in a Nevada business license filing for Solarcode, a LLC doing business in multiple states, including Nevada and Arizona.
In January 2022 Solarcode agreed to a four-year repayment plan with Eclipse Service but missed its first five payments, leading the company in late June 2022 to sue in U.S. District Court in Milwaukee.
Lehner’s debts also included missed payments for a collection of rare snakes he purchased for $1.2 million in 2017, according to the bankruptcy filing. Lehner keeps the snakes at his reptile farm in Plato, Missouri.
Lehner has made $32 million in his NHL career in salary. The bankruptcy filing estimated the couple have between $1 million and $10 million in assets.
Lehner, 31, signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Golden Knights in 2020, and is due $10.5 million the next two seasons, in addition to his remaining 2022-23 salary. He has spent this season recovering from hip surgery.
Nothing to do with all of this, but will the Golden Knights hang on to Lehner, or not? That seems to be the burning question.
