Scrabble Adding More Slang Terms To Dictionary, Including “Yeet,” and “Boujee”
I love Scrabble. Old school, open the board, wooden tiles in the bag, Scrabble!
I used to play Scrabble with my mom, and she was so good at it. It forced me to want to be good at it, too. Now I don’t know that I ever became the Scrabble player that my mom was, but I try.
The Expression Heard Most In Scrabble: “That’s A Word!”
During the pandemic of 2020, I played a lot of Scrabble. As did most of you, I would imagine. We played “made up words” Scrabble, “dirty words” Scrabble, and of course, regulation Scrabble. But there is always someone who questions a word, right?
‘G-o-o-t-m-e-r.’ That’s a word! Somewhere, that is a word! Ok, how about g-o-o-t? Fine, then I’m putting my tiles back in, and taking new ones (my rule when playing Scrabble). Well now, Scrabble is adding more slang to the game.
Scrabble Adding More Slang Terms To Official Dictionary
There’s more than one “official” Scrabble dictionary, and the Merriam-Webster dictionary is what most Americans use. But the one used in other English-speaking countries just added a bunch of new slang terms, like “yeet,” “boujee,” and “grammable.”
The official Scrabble dictionary is adding a bunch of new words (probably not ‘gootmer’). Well, one of the “official” dictionaries is. Yes, there is more than one official dictionary.
Most Americans use the Merriam-Webster version. But Collins Dictionary is one that is used by most other English-speaking countries. Some international competitions actually combine them. Wait, what? I can compete? Will it be in the Olympics? Perhaps it will replace Breaking?
Collins Dictionary just announced they’re adding 2,000 new words. They include a bunch of Gen Z slang, and they will all be “playable words” they say, starting January 1st, 2025. But you know I’ll cheat, and play them NOW.
No word on how many are being added to the Merriam-Webster version, but here are some of the new words Collins Dictionary is adding, to make your Scrabble playing even more fun. Not necessarily new words and terms, they are just official now.
1. Yeet: meaning “to throw,” but it is also used to express excitement.
2. Bacne: short for back acne. (eww)
3. Boujee: fancy or luxurious. They also added multiple spellings for it.
4. Floof: slang for any furry animal.
5. Nibling: gender-neutral term for a niece or nephew.
6. Amirite: comedians have used this for years. The one-word slang version of “am I right.”

8. Anyhoo: slang for “anyhow” or “anyway.”
9. Coulda: short for “could have.”
10. Grammable: something that is worthy of being posted on Instagram.
There you go.More slang terms, that are now real and “official” words. So you can say, “that’s a word” – and it will be. Now, go make Nibling a triple word score!
