87,000 Pounds Of Potentially Contaminated Meat Recalled
An urgent recall on potentially contaminated meat has been issued by government health officials. They say the meat may contain a harmful bacteria. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced approximately 87,382 pounds of various ready-to-eat meat products recently tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
The meat is from the Behrmann Meat and Processing company and was produced between July and September of this year. The items were mostly shipped to locations in Illinois, Kentucky and Missourt, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.
Foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause a serious infection called listeriosis. The infection mostly affects elderly people and those with weakened immune systems, and some have reported fatal results. Pregnant women and newborns are also highly at risk. And while these are the groups at higher risk, others can be affected as well.
Other effects of listeriosis include headaches, fever, muscle aches, confusion, stiff neck, convulsions, and loss of balance. Gastrointestinal issues have also been reported. In pregnant women, the bacteria can cause miscarriages, premature delivery or stillbirths. Newborns who are born with the bacteria can also suffer severe infection.
People can experience these and other flu-like symptoms up to two months after consuming the contaminated product. The U.S. Department of Agriculture urges people to call their healthcare provider if they suspect they have been affected.
A list of products suspected to be contaminated can be found here. These ready-to-eat products include hot dogs, pork chops, lunch meats, sausages, bacon products, and more. If you’re uncertain of your product, check inside the product’s USDA mark of inspection. The projects subject to recall will have the establishment number “EST 20917”.
If you do suspect you have any contaminated meat product, the U.S. Department of Agriculture urges you to throw the product away. Or you can return it to where you bought it for a refund.
