1. Dr. Ellen Ochoa became the first Latina to go to space aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1993 and served as Johnson Space Center’s first Hispanic Director.
2. In 2011, former Governor Brian Sandoval was the first person of Hispanic origin elected as Governor of Nevada. Sandoval was also the first Hispanic federal judge in Nevada and is the first person of Hispanic origin to serve as president of the University of Nevada, Reno.
3. In 1962, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, both of Mexican American descent, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association to fight for the fair treatment of farmers in the U.S.
4. Born in Las Vegas, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto made history in 2017 when she took office in the U.S. Senate, becoming the first Latino to hold this position.
5. Alida Ortiz Sotomayor became the first Puerto Rican woman to earn a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico in 1976. She would go on to develop their first Earth Sciences curriculum for public schools.
6. In 2016, Daniel Corona became Nevada’s youngest and first openly gay Latino mayor, overseeing West Wendover, Nevada.
7. Olga E. Custodio made history in 1981 as the first Latina U.S. Military pilot and served in the United States Air Force for 24 years.
8. In 2013, Isaac Barron became the first Hispanic member of the North Las Vegas City Council and Southern Nevada’s first Hispanic Mayor Pro Tempore.
9. Dr. Franklin Chang Diaz became the first astronaut of Latino descent in 1980. He flew on seven space shuttle flights, logging more than 1,500 hours in space and 19 space walks.
10. In 1980, Edmundo “Eddie” Escobedo, founded the first and largest Spanish newspaper in Las Vegas, El Mundo.
11. In 1959, Severo Ochoa became the first Hispanic American to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
12. Rafael Rivera, a Mexican scout, was credited as the first non-native American to discover modern-day Las Vegas in 1830, while searching for water on the Spanish Trail expedition.
13. Recognized for her creation of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, Ildaura Murillo-Rode was named a “Living Legend” by the American Academy of Nursing in 1994.
14. Las Vegas has several independent grocers that cater to the Latin and Hispanic community including, Cardena’s Market, La Bonita Supermarkets, and Mariana’s SuperMarkets which started as a small tortilla shop in east Las Vegas in 1989.
15. In 2009, Sonia Sotomayor became the first Hispanic person and the third woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
16. Polly Gonzalez was an award-winning journalist at KLAS Channel 8 and the first Latina evening news anchor in Nevada in 1994.
17. In 1945, poet and educator Gabriela Mistral became the first Hispanic person to win a Nobel Prize in Literature.
18. In 1990, Antonia Novello made history, serving as the first woman and the first Hispanic person to serve as U.S. Surgeon General.
19. In 2006, Angela Salinas became the first Hispanic female brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) before being promoted to major general in 2010. When Salinas retired in 2013, she was the highest-ranking woman in the USMC.
20. In 1993, Helen Rodríguez-Trías became the first Latina to preside over the American Public Health Association, where she used her position to promote health equity and women’s rights.
21. Dr. Juliet V. García, was the first Hispanic woman to serve as a college president in American history. She was the former longtime president of The University of Texas at Brownsville (now The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley), and was awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022.
