Bob Uecker, Legendary Brewers Broadcaster and ‘Major League’ Star, Dies at 90
Bob Uecker, the longtime play-by-play announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers who also played Harry Doyle in the Major League films, has died. He was 90.
The Brewers shared the news of Uecker’s passing saying, “We are heartbroken to announce that Brewers icon and Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Uecker passed away today at the age of 90.”
Uecker has served as the Brewers radio play-by-play announcer since 1971. Prior to his broadcasting career, Uecker played in the majors from 1962 to 1967 for four teams: the Milwaukee Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Braves after they relocated to Atlanta. During his time with the Cardinals, they won the World Series in 1964.
Of course, Uecker will forever be remembered for his incredible broadcasting career, which saw him dabble in the entertainment world. He was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and it was Carson who referred to him as “Mr. Baseball.” Uecker also starred on the 1980s sitcom Mr. Belvedere.
His most popular acting credit came via the Major League films where he played play-by-play announcer Harry Doyle. Like Uecker in real life, Doyle was incredibly funny on the call and is responsible for some of the most-quoted lines from the film series.
