Rob Lowe Once Recorded Demo with Toto, Credits Cocaine
Rob Lowe secretly recorded a song with Toto back in the 1980s when he was still using cocaine. (Yes, that sentence sounds like an amazing MadLibs one-liner, but it’s actually true.)
The actor dropped this bombshell while talking with Bill Simmons on his podcast Literally With Rob Lowe. This unreleased recording fits between his breakout roles in The Outsiders and St. Elmo’s Fire. During their conversation, Lowe and Simmons got into talking about Yacht Rock, with Toto being a big part of the discussion.
As Lowe explained, “There was a minute in the 80s where I was definitely doing too much Bolivian marching powder and just being a f—ing lunatic, and [it was] also coming at the time in a young actor’s career where they’re too old to play the roles they’ve been playing, but they’re too young to play the roles that will last you the rest of your life, which are really the great ones … I love music so much, as evidenced by this talk and all of that, that I got it into my head that maybe I should think more about music and I cut a demo with Toto.”
This new detail adds another layer to Lowe’s recovery story. He’s gone from being a troubled young star to becoming one of TV’s most reliable actors over many years in the business. Now sober for over 30 years, the actor says staying clean helped his career take off. Getting sober led to his success in shows like The West Wing and Parks and Recreation.
