Mistletoe: The Real Story Behind The Holiday Plant
Kissing under the mistletoe is a holiday tradition that goes back centuries, but now you have the real story behind the holiday plant! The Mike & Carla Morning Show didn’t know if you knew the true story of how the whole “kissing” thing came about or what mistletoe is actually made from.
Well, here’s the true story: First of all, mistletoe is known from old England as “little dung twig” because the plant actually spreads through bird droppings! So in essence, every time you hold a bit of mistletoe over someone’s head hoping to get a kiss, you are holding a piece of “poop”! Boy, if that doesn’t say the “holidays”, nothing does right?
Now why do we put mistletoe up throughout the house or even at work hoping to get a kiss? Well, as we said earlier, this tradition dates back centuries, but according to a recently updated article put out by the History Channel, sites the plant’s romantic overtones to the Celtic Druids dating back to the 1st century A.D. Since the mistletoe would actually blossom during the cold winters, it was viewed as a “sacred” plant that they would give to humans and animals in hopes of being more fertile.
We know that might be a stretch, but to catch you up and know why we think we have to kiss when caught standing under mistletoe, well chalk it up to someone starting a rumor that it was bad luck to refuse! That’s it! It’s all based on a rumor…that’s why people feel the need to kiss while standing under a piece of “poop”, because if you don’t you’ll experience bad luck.
Can you believe that we actually bought into this and still continue this tradition into 2022? Just one of the stories that came out during “A Few Things We Think You Should Know” on The M&C Morning Show. Listen to the entire segment below to get the rest of the details on mistletoe and other stories…oh, and enjoy!
